Today I learned something pretty exciting about the Lucas County Democratic Party: the Headquarters will be relocated! The building we are currently in is functional, but it is pretty old and very small. I was able to get a look at the new floor plan for the headquarters because I had to update it (explaining the white-out on the picture), and it is much larger than the current headquarters.

What I am most excited about when it comes to our new headquarters is that the Ohio Democratic Party will be able to train and recruit from there. Right now, the LCDP does not have any official ties with the ODP, but with the new headquarters, that will change.

One of the things I also did today was film some informational videos with another intern. The primary elections are coming up soon on September 10. After that will be the general elections on November 6. Also, the polling locations have changed since the last election.

The elections are almost always held in the previous polling locations. Because of this, we thought it would be beneficial if we could create a video that would clearly explain that the polling locations have been changed to Walbridge Park and the Toledo Chinese Alliance Church. Unless we decide to refilm it again, we will add the finishing touches on post the video on social media, especially Facebook.

The Lucas County Democratic Party also has a responsibility to respond to people that live in Lucas County, even to those that disagree with us. Today, somebody called that wished to speak about certain taxes, especially those pertaining to highways. Of course, the Lucas County Democratic Party is not a policy-making institution.

As a result, we’re not in the position to influence policy in regards to highways. Sure, we have influence over Democratic city council people, but even they don’t have jurisdiction over highways. Because of this, I had to use VoteBuilder with this man’s information to find out his representatives (State Senator, State House, and US House).

  1. Interesting stuff. So did you write to the man and explain whom to contact? Also, do you know what the impetus was behind changing polling locations? Whose decision was it, and did it target any particular populations?
